Historic Comic-Con Panel
By Sampo

We now have full confirmation of the upcoming panel at Comic-Con in
San Diego, Friday, July 25, 7:15 p.m.

On the panel will be: Trace Beaulieu, Paul Chaplin, Frank Conniff,
Bill Corbett, Joel Hodgson, Jim Mallon, Kevin Murphy, Bridget Nelson,
Mike Nelson, Mary Jo Pehl and J. Elvis Weinstein. Wow.

The moderator will be Patton Oswalt.

If I wasn't a pauper that lived on the East Coast, I would be there.
Those of you attending must record the hell out of this.

If only, as we commemorate the 20th anniversary of this remarkable
series, there was a chance that it could rise like the mighty phoenix
once again...

That sounds like fun. Everyone who's able to go, enjoy it for those of
us who can't.

Ooh. Yes. This is a lot of exciting fun and, well, I won't
be going to it, but I'm sure I'll appreciate the video of the event
captured by hand phone and posted to YouTube at quality levels nearly
as high as those of the Vic-20.

Well, sure, he's the natural choice for the -- huh? Was
Penn Jilette booked that day?

Well, as one can plainly see from interviews with him and in his own
stand-up, Patton is a big fan of sci-fi, horror, comic books, and
movies and, one assumes, our humble little cowtown puppet show.

And despite "King of Queens", still hasn't gotten his big mainstream
break out of standup yet for playing non-rodent characters...

Standup, eh? Maybe someone should ask who he would have played, IF
FATE HAD DECREED that he be part of one of the incarnations of MST3K.
And how would he have influenced the writing? :-)

It would have been ironic if he played the SOL rat!

Last July, while the Comic-Con was going on, I saw him at the
Dallas-Fort Worth airport waiting to board the same flight to Burbank
that I was. I thought about asking him why he wasn't at Comic-Con, but
he looked like he didn't particularly want to be bothered (and I would
have felt bad if it turned out to be because he'd been at a relative's
funeral, or something like that).

Back in 2000, I saw him doing his stand-up act in the back room of a
diner in Hollywood, as part of the Frank Conniff-organized "Frank's Chop
House" comedy workshop...so he's previously acquainted with at least one
of the "MST3K" folks.

I was already planning to go to Comic-Con for the day on either Saturday
or Sunday; I'd love to attend this panel, but it being on Friday night,
it's a little hard to make the trip down from L.A. (and, more
importantly, back up to L.A.), especially since I don't have a place to
stay in San Diego.

Penn would be sensible; I have MST3K Candid Gamera promos on tape with
him announcing.

Wow. I suddenly want to trade my flight to and hotel in L.A. and my
ticket to the Cinematic Titanic show for this.

I really need to watch my credit cards, but... oh what the hell. Does
anybody want a roommate for a night?

(sigh) Why not the ComicCon that was just in NYC?

Hey, Jason, my MST# is almost the same as yours.

My Mistie number is ... ah ... twice Maxwell Smart's, with an
extra zero put in for, ah ... I don't know.
